Seismic Station Locations

The Himalayan frontal arc is seismically one of the very active regions of the world and some of great earthquakes have occurred here. Earthquakes in the last decade at Uttarkashi and Chamoli in the Himalaya have been disastrous, in terms of both life and property. Understanding the seismogenic potential of the Himalaya, forming the policies towards earthquake resistant design and creating awareness among general public, therefore, assumes paramount importance. The DST has evolved many programmes to understand the past and ongoing seismicity in the Himalaya, and generate the database, necessary to understand the nature of active faults in this region and also make rough assessments on when and where to expect future earthquakes. Clearly these efforts will help the developmental activities in the region.

In northeastern India , the Indian plate is sliding under the Arunachal Himalaya , and its eastern flank is going under the Patkai-Naga-Arakan Ranges along the India- Myanmar border. As a matter of fact , the whole mountain system of the Himalaya trending west to east bends south-west abruptly – and spectacularly- taking the Assam region in its tight embrace .Moreover , the Meghalaya – Mikir plateaus are pushing the Assam planes northwords , resulting in the reduction of the width of the Brahmaputra planes to about 80Km .Understandably , the Assam region is split by a number of faults trending NNW-SSE , N-S, NNE-SSW and E-W .Many of these faults are quite active , registering movement off an on .The slips along the active faults produce earthquakes .since the Indian landmass is uninterruptedly pushing north eastward the faults become active again and again .This the reason why the north eastern part of India is rocked so often and so strongly by the earthquakes.
